I love our mountain lands!
For almost 20 years, I have hiked, camped, and explored these beautiful wildernesses. Southern Arizona is uniquely blessed to have such a diversity of environments, including these life giving islands.
I lived on Mt. Lemmon from '94 to '99, which was literally the pinnacle of my life, in and around Tucson. What can I say? I love the mountains, the woods, the rock formations, the canyons, and the waterfalls...
We are so lucky to have all of this grandeur at our disposal!
Please share your stories, inspiration, concerns... and of course: Photos!

What a cool name for this tribe...
and is there ANYWHERE else where you can go 30 miles as the crow flies and experience over a half-dozen zones of temperature/vegetation/elevation ?
if I could hang out anywhere in the world...
my first choice would be to look out and away from the top of a Sky Island...see all of that scenery spread out below...and be able to say that I was home !
Peace.Out

Re: Welcome to Sky Islands!
Sat, October 2, 2004 - 10:23 PMI think the Sky Islands are Arizona's answer to the beach.
My favorite is the Chiricahuas, but I never seem to be able to get out there and spend most of my heavy Arizona/self-reflection time in the Santa Ritas.
When I first moved to Tucson, I was blown away by the Catalinas, and found the highway on a map. So I drove up and turned on a random road and wound up on Mount Bigelow. I definitely won't forget that first time anytime soon.
I still go up there at least once a month and put on the Aphex or Bola and just watch the lights and stars glimmer in tune.
I love going up in the winter though because everyone here seems to think it's too cold, so it's empty.
I'm amazed when I find people here who haven't been up to Mount Lemmon in years. It's disappointing when people take such real, striking beauty for granted when it's so accessible.
