I am thinking about going down this weekend to bike and hike...maybe hit the Stronghold for climbing beforehand. Any good tales of the Chiricahua's?

Re: Chiricahua Adventures
Wed, December 27, 2006 - 7:32 AMOK, I just put up some shots from this weekends adventures. Did the Monument and Chiracahua Peak.....it was awsome. I think the Big Loop trail in the monument is now in my top three. Chiracahua Peak was cool but rough..in winter...if I wasn't able to track the trail by the bear AND big cat prints I probably would have gotten lost...sure made for a spooky couple of miles...the tracks were scarry fresh! -

Sat, June 2, 2007 - 1:25 PMI forget which, but some famous Indian war chief is buried up there in a secret grave somewhere. Geronimo or Sitting Bull I think. I always thought it'd be cool to find. -

Re: Chiricahua Adventures
Sat, July 7, 2007 - 7:22 AMHis name was Cochise. He is hidden somewhere, in the Dragoons or in the Chiricahuas, nobody knows. It gives me great pleasure to know that he is still hidden up there. I once named my dog after him. He was a beautiful English Springer Spaniel. This was during the short time I was the manager of the Pine Canyon Methodist Church Camp there. It was one of the worst jobs I have ever had. Imagine having a committee of nice church people for a boss. Every weekend along with over 100 campers I would get a couple of the committee members telling me how the last committee members were all wrong and I should do it this way. It was horrible. My take home was $666.00 per month. That should have told me something! This was in 1978. Long time ago. Now I live and work in Aravaipa Canyon. No committee just me, my beautiful wife and a few thousand acres of wilderness. Life is good. -

Re: Chiricahua Adventures
Sat, July 7, 2007 - 8:39 PMLegend has it he was buried with some nice stuff including a pair of fancy pistols.
Anyhow, about hiking the Chirs, the road only covers a tiny portion of the mountain. Once you get off trail, there is a hell of a lotta mountain to see. Water is a little iffy this time of year, the cats are coming down out of the mountains for prey n water so I'd take plenty to drink if you go. You get lost up there and your shit's in the wind. -

Re: Chiricahua Adventures
Wed, July 11, 2007 - 4:35 PMMan...I could not imagine walking around out there right now...roast...and yes, lot'o'mountain. I followed a trail and was on my own in a couple spots due to the fire/erosion action. Made me real glad to see the trail I was heading for across the way.
